Bhatia, the party vice-president, had suffered haemorrhage in January and was admitted to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital here. His condition had since been critical. Earlier, chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal had visited Bhatia in the hospital and announced his treatment at the state government’s expense.

In a condolence message on Saturday, the chief minister described Bhatia as a dedicated soldier of the SAD, who strengthened the party at the grassroots level. Terming it as a personal loss, Badal recalled the services rendered by Bhatia for the well-being of society, especially the downtrodden. He said a void had been created in the SAD that was difficult to fill.
