Residents of ten villages under Baghapurana sub-division in Moga cross a drain everyday between Bhaloor and Jiwanwala as there is no bridge connecting the two villages.
The road and the passage connecting the two villages was filled with water, after farmers released irrigation water into the drain.
Students commuting to school pass through the stagnant water in the cold and there is no respite. More than 50 schoolvans of various private schools of this area also pass through this bridgeless drain.
Residents of villages like Bhaloor, Nathewala, Rode, Demru, Mahla Kalan, Mahla Khurd, Langeana, Jiwan Wala, Hariyewala, Dhoorkot and Lande also have only this route to take to reach Kotkapura town.
"Residents have demanded the construction of the bridge from Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal a number of times. The issue was also discussed with deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal during a sangat darshan. Even an estimate has not been prepared," said social activist and resident of Rode village Gurpiyar Singh Brar.
During the monsoon, the situation gets worst with the route |non-navigable and people have to travel more than 20-km extra to travel the distance.
"We have been demanding construction of bridge at this drain for 25 years. However, no authority or political party has even given assurance to us," said former sarpanch of Bhaloor village Gurdas Singh.
"A permanent solution to the problem is construction of bridge while the residents of these villages tried to install pipes for passing of water to make way at this place but authorities stopped them from doing this. The villagers were threatened with registration of criminal cases," said social worker Rajvir Singh Bhalooria.
