Punjab Mandi Board chairman Ajmer Singh Lakhowal urged the central government to waive farmer's loan of Rs 35,000 crore, at the swearing-in of Sirhind market committee chairman Inderjit Singh Sandhu on Friday.
He also said the government should new loans at 3% simple interest.
Condemning the minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 50 on paddy crop by the central government, Bharti Kissan Union (Lakhowal) president said MSP should be fixed as per the recommendations of the Swaminathan report.
Supporting crop diversification, he said the state government had already launched measures to create awareness among the farmers which would save the fertility of soil and prevent further depletion of groundwater.
He said that they would hold a meeting on August 1 to discuss the implementation of Swaminathan report's recommendations for agricultural reforms.
