A visit to a banquet hall underlined that even at the function the government’s move was being discussed, and even having effect. Close relatives, who are expected to give cash as per tradition, were seen with wads of Rs 100 notes.

But Naina Sinha, attending a wedding at Zirakpur, said, “I gave Rs 500 notes as I had only those. They can get the notes changed from the bank.”

At a wedding reception at a hotel in Sector 24, at least one guest gifted a cheque. The groom, Vijay, “A friend of ours preferred to give a cheque so that we could simply drop it at a collection centre, and don’t have to get any exchange from the bank.”

There were those too who tried innovation.
