The Punjab and Haryana high court on Friday wondered what purpose would be solved by not throwing open a revolutionary hideout to the general public.

During the resumed hearing of a contempt petition, the high court bench of justice RK Jain asked the state’s counsel as to what was the purpose of declaring the revolutionaries’ hideout as a protected monument if it was not being thrown open to public.

The high court was dealing with the contempt petition wherein a protected site, first hideout of revolutionaries led by Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh, situated in Turi Bazaar, Ferozepur, has been demanded to be open to public. The state had given assurance in this regard, but failed to comply with it, which resulted in advocate HC Arora of the high court filing the contempt petition.

The high court bench, while posting the matter for March 21, has sought a status report from the government.

“It would be a befitting tribute to martyrs, if the building is thrown open to the general public before March 23, 2016 (next martyrdom anniversary of these three revolutionaries), Arora had argued before the court
