With amputated hands, Kulwinder clears PCS exam

In the Punjab Civil Services ( judicial ) examination , Kulwinder secured fifth position in the physically challenged category.

Hailing from a farmer’s family of Kakrala Bhaika village near Patran in Patiala, Kulwinder lost both her hands while she was playing with her siblings on a fodder cutting machine. She was in Class 7 then. “It was not easy to get over this. I thought I would never again go to school but motivation from my parents and teachers, especially Gurmeet Kaur and Baljeet Singh from the village school, helped me continue with my studies,” she says.

Kulwinder wrote the PCS examination papers herself without any help.

“Had they not inspired me, I might be sitting at home doing daily chores,” she says. A bright student from her school days, Kulwinder did her matric from the village school, and senior secondary and graduation from a Patran college.

She says, “I did not allow my handicap to come in the way of success. I have been writing with my arms since matriculation without any help.”

Her father Karnail Singh gives all credit to his daughter saying she never allowed the incident to dampen her spirits. “We motivated her, but it was she who made it happen,” he adds.
