Women volunteers of the campaign warned that if the administration failed to catch the drug peddlers, who allegedly operate at the behest of some ruling SAD leaders, they would launch an agitation in all the villages in the district and would also start holding protests outside the offices of the authorities concerned.

The women, armed with wooden sticks and sharpedged weapons, keep a watch on the entry of drug peddlers during the night.

Late Thursday night, they gheraoed a drug smuggler at Bilaspur village, 46 km from here, but due to some lapse on the part of women volunteers, the culprit managed to escape, Amarjit Kaur Bilaspur, a senior leader of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act workers’ union told HT.

‘Chitta’ is easily available in all villages of Nihal Singh Wala subdivision as some Akali leaders are promoting its sale.”
