With a view to curbing violations by women drivers, the traffic wing of the police department has deployed women cops on all busy intersections and traffic lights across the city.
Interestingly, since the women cops have been deployed, the number of challans has gone up as they have taken stern action against women who violate traffic rules.
Earlier, male traffic cops in order to avoid any controversy would not issue challans to women drivers violating norms as they were often accused of 'misbehaving' with them. The traffic personnel had often complained about the problem to their senior officials.
Realising the situation, the traffic wing of the police commissionerate has put 12 women cops of different ranks on the traffic job. A sub-inspector, an ASI and 10 other women head constables and constables have been managing traffic at several places in the city, especially at Bharat Nagar Chowk, Fountain Chowk, Ghumar Mandi, Mall Road, Pakhowal Road, and Sarabha Nagar main market, where the movement of women drivers is high.
"Generally, women violate traffic signals, park their vehicles wrongly, do not wear seat belts and avoid wearing helmets while riding a two-wheeler. They also indulge in arguing when stopped for a violation or start sobbing, but now women cops manage such acts," says a cop.
"Earlier, when we used to stop women for violating traffic rules, they created a scene and usually called their husbands or relatives who argued with us. They also used to make complaints to senior officials and accuse us wrongly of misbehaving with them," the cop added.

According to ACP (traffic) Swapan Sharma, it is an initiative of the police commissioner. Putting women cops on the traffic job has been part of their training. The number of women violators has been increasing in posh areas.
To curb violations by these drivers, we have put women cops on traffic duty. Following this, the number of challans against women traffic violators has increased.
