More than a year after Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari announced that a flyover will be built at the Tribune Chowk, the UT transport department will finalise a consultant for the Rs 300-crore project within a week. Work on the project is expected to start by December and will be completed in two years.
In June 2016, Member Parliament Kirron Kher had taken up the issue with Gadkari and the project was approved.
UT chief engineer Mukesh Anand said, “We have received tenders for the job of the consultant and will send the name for approval to union ministry this month only. We expect the construction to start by the end of this year.”
More than 2.5 lakh vehicles cross the Tribune Chowk every day. With Tribune Chowk being the only entry and exit point for traffic moving from Zirakpur, Ambala and parts of Punjab, traffic snarls are witnessed at the point, due to which commuters have to sometimes waste more than 10-25 minutes to pass this Chowk.

{{/usCountry}}It may be remembered that in the Comprehensive Mobility Plan submitted to the UT Administration earlier, the RITES had stated that Tribune Chowk exhibits high traffic volumes (more than 1 lakh Passenger Car Units, a measure of traffic flow-rate).
The daily traffic volume (16 hours) of total vehicles of 1,43,170 including 1,35,805 PCUs (passenger car units) was observed at Rotary of Dakshin Marg and Purv Marg near Sector-31 Tribune Chowk.
