The Public Works Department (PWD) has suspended four officials, including an XEN and a SDO, for the construction of Rampura-Maur road with low-quality material.

However, the action in the 2012 case was reportedly taken now only after local MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal was informed of the matter at sangat darshan on January 6.

XEN Adesh Gupta, SDO Paramjit Singh Deol, JE Jasvir Singh and Ved Parkash have been suspended for failing in their duties to maintain the quality of the road.

PWD chief engineer Maddan Kumar Bansal was evasive when queried on the delayed action in the case and whether Harsimrat Badal had 'directed' the department to act.

So, with departments seemingly acting only on instructions from top political leaders on issues raised at sangat darshans, there is considerable dread among officials who have indulged in wrongdoings, especially perhaps in water supply and sanitation.

THE PROJECT

A private builder had constructed 20.4 km of Rampura-Maur road at a cost of Rs 13 crore. Work was started on June 13, 2011 and was completed on July 31, 2012.

In spite of the road, no action was taken against any official or company representative. The company was allowed to build the road again, which also developed potholes in a very short time, again.
