The clash was the result of a heated exchange of words during a ‘nagar kirtan’ (religious procession) that started from Gurdwara Baba Bir Singh in Naurangabad village. After other devotees intervened, the two groups pacified.

Later, when the procession reached the Jhabhal shrine around 7.30 pm, victim Jarmanjit Singh and others in the procession were attacked by the rival group with sharp-edged weapons. While most of the attackers managed to flee, two of them were nabbed and thrashed by the devotees.

Jarmanjit was rushed to hospital, where his condition is reported to be stable. The two attackers were handed over to the Jhabhal police. They are being interrogated to nab their acquaintances, said station house officer Sukhbit Singh, station house officer.
