It has come to light that the victim had allegedly been raped by her brother-in-law in October last year and was pursuing a criminal case against the accused. It was in this regard that she, accompanied by a 22-year-old relative, had gone to Ranka to record her statement before the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO).

According her relative who sustained injuries in the attack, after the duo failed to meet the SDPO, they boarded the Chopan-Chunar-Barwadih down passenger train to head back, which is when the attack took place.

“No sooner had the train left Kechaki railway station around 10.20 pm than 10-12 armed people came to us (and) snatched away our mobile and `700... They tried to drag away (the victim) with them. When I resisted, they attacked me with a knife. Later they pushed her out of the door of the running train,” he had said on Tuesday.

“Prima facie, the motive behind the murder seems to be to destroy the evidence. We are investigating the case,” GRP deputy superintendent of police Binod Kumar Mahato said.
