The court held Sonu Kumar Verma guilty under IPC section 342, 436 and 302 and awarded life imprisonment to him, along with a fine of `60,000. They disposed the case within three years of the accused surrendering in 2011.

The crime was committed on the night of December 7, 2010, in the servant quarter of PHED guest house near Dhanbad Circuit House. The convict had locked the room from outside and set fire after pouring petrol through the window in which his three sisters-in-law - Usha Devi (mother of two kids), Tina Devi and unmarried Rina Kumara - were sleeping. Charred remains of all the three sisters were found on the next morning.

According to victims’ family members, Sonu fell in love with his younger sister-in-law Rina and wanted to marry her. But his father-in-law Shiv Shankar Prasad, unaware of this development, fixed Rina’s marriage with another person.
