A 16-year-old Ranchi schoolgirl died of suspected heat stroke on Monday.

Tripti Apoline Tirkey, a student of Don Bosco School, appeared for Class 10 exams this year and was waiting for her results.

Her parents said she complained of fever and body ache on Friday and was given home remedies. She was admitted to Orchid Hospital on Saturday after her condition failed to improve, said her father Dilip Tirkey.

“Hospital authorities said they would do her bone marrow and blood tests and keep her under observation for 72 hours. But she died within those 72 hours. It is a sure case of heat stroke since she did not have any medical history,” said Tirkey.

Jharkhand has been sweltering at an average maximum temperature of 42 degrees Celsius this April.

“I will write to DCs (deputy commissioners) to at least direct early vacation in all schools to protect children from the heat wave,” said Ratan Tirkey, a member of the Tribal Advisory Council.
