In 2014, Dulquer Salmaan made his Tamil debut with Balaji Mohan’s Vaaya Moodi Pesavum. While many believed it was a one-off outing, he proved them all wrong by signing Mani Ratnam’s OK Kanmani. Awaiting the release of Malayalam-Tamil bilingual thriller Solo, Dulquer has signed another yet-untitled Tamil outing in which he will be paired with Ritu Varma of Pellichoopulu fame. Going at the rate at which Dulquer is signing Tamil films, he seems quite interested about expanding his base in Kollywood and it makes sense because he’s a Chennai boy and speaks fluent Tamil.
In a recent media interaction, Dulquer had said that he is keen to explore more opportunities in Tamil as he is very comfortable with the language. Quoting the example of Mahanati, which will be dubbed in Telugu, he said it has been his long-time desire to do a period film. “In Malayalam, we don’t have big budgets to do a period film. Mahanati is being made on a massive scale and it’s a great opportunity for me to explore new markets,” he said. In Mahanati, a biopic on legendary southern actress Savitri, he plays the veteran actor Gemini Ganesan.
This project will mark the directorial debut of Desingh Periyasamy, who had made a few short films so far. Dulquer will complete his Hindi project and then commence work on this film from October. It’s tipped to be a romantic-thriller and the makers are yet to finalise the rest of the cast and crew.
