Samantha Akkineni, who turns 31 today, has clearly carved her own niche in Tollywood. There is even a song in the film as an ode to her beauty.

While she debuted in the Tamil film industry, which happens to be her home industry as she was born and brought up in Chennai, it was the Telugu film industry where she made her mark starting with her debut film, Ye Maaya Chesava in 2010. In the film directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon , Samantha plays the role of Jessie in what was one of the most memorable romantic films of the year and one of the best films by Menon.

Then, in 2012 came SS Rajamouli’s Eega. A unique tale of love and revenge in which the hero reincarnates as a fly, became a huge hit. Samantha Akkineni, then Samantha Ruth Prabhu, was paired opposite Nani, initially and then a fly. While the Telugu filmdom welcomed Sam with open arms, she was still just a newbie in Tamil industry with two not very impressive movies.

Yet again, it was Gautham Menon who gave her a break in Tamil films with Neethane En Ponvasantham, in which she played the role of Nithya Vasudevan opposite actor Jeeva. The film was about high school sweethearts who mature with time even as they repeatedly break up. She reprised this role for her Telugu film Yeto Vellipoyindhi Manasu, in which she was cast opposite Nani.

But after this, Samantha started to sign big-budget projects. She was cast opposite Vijay in Kaththi, Suriya in Anjaan, Dhanush in Thanga Magan, Vikram in 10 Endrathukulle and Rana Daggubati in Bangalore Days in Tamil films and in Tollywood she was working alongside Naga Chaitanya whom she married in 2017. She also worked with Mahesh Babu, Allu Arjun, Nithiin, Jr NTR and Nagarjuna Akkineni.

Her films with Vijay (Kaththi, Their and Mersal) were huge hits. This commercial success has now given her space and opportunity to work on films that have more fleshed out characters. She is looking forward to the release of Mahanati in which she plays a journalist, Madhuravani. She stammers when she is anxious and works with Vijay Antony, played by Vijay Deverakonda.

She is also expected to be seen in Super Deluxe where Vijay Sethupathi plays the role of a woman. She is working on the remake of hit Kannada film U-Turn. Samantha is also looking forward to two commercial entertainers - Irumbu Thirai and Seema Raja. She has also broken the myth that women actors take a break after marriage.

She did not stick to stereotypes in films and neither did she openly rebel. Samantha went with the flow and she still does!
