Actress Rituparna Sengupta has finally turned producer. However, the actress, who’s an emotional person, admits that she can never be a hard taskmaster as a producer. The Utsav actress says that she has faced quite a few problems as a producer because of her soft nature. “Everyone knows that I cannot be a tough taskmaster. I have faced problems for being emotional. But then I keep telling myself that this industry is my family. So, I forgive and forget,” says Rituparna, who won the National Award for best actress for Rituparno Ghosh’s Dahan (1997).

The actress is relieved that her production, Potadar Kirti, has finally hit the theatres . The comedy, also starring Priyanshu Chatterjee and Rajesh Sharma, was lying in the cans for more than five years. Rituparna informs that the film got delayed because of technical issues. “I lost my father in 2010 and was upset. Then I got busy with my films in Bollywood and Tollywood. There were certain technical issues, which needed to be sorted out. Also, a part of the shooting was left. After the shooting got delayed by a few months, it was difficult to adjust the dates of the actors,” says Rituparna.
Production, however, isn’t a an unexplored territory for Rituparna. She had earlier produced quite a few non-fiction shows and a short film. In 2010, Rituparna produced two films — Potadar Kirti and Brishtir Chayachobi. Unfortunately, both the ventures got delayed. “I have always supported new directors. I have done so in my productions too. From Shiboprosad Mukhopadhyay, Aniruddha Roy Choudhury, Agnidev Chatterjee to John, I have worked with a lot of new directors,” she says.

That said, Rituparna sounds anxious about the fate of the film at the box office. And she has her reasons. She says that the visuals of her comedy film with Priyanshu today looks old. “The content of Bengali cinema has changed over the years and so has the audience’s taste. My film doesn’t look as glossy as the other releases in town. But I am hopeful that the audiences in the suburbs will enjoy it because it’s a fun film,” she says. However, she believes the urban audience will like Brishtir Chayachobi, directed by Dulal Lahiri, as it’s based on a play by Manoj Mitra.
In the meantime, the Bela Seshe actress says that the next time she produces a film; she will put her money into content-driven cinema.
