For me, Mahanayika will always be our very own Suchitra Sen. I am very thankful to Uttam jethu (uncle; late actor Uttam Kumar) as he was the first guardian in my career. After his sudden demise, I lost that guardian. But when it comes to Mrs Sen, I have scant memory of her.
My personal memory of her is from a picture I have with me where she is kissing my cheeks on the sets of Chhotto Jigyasa (1968; Prosenjit worked as a child actor in the film).
I wanted her as an adviser in my life, just like Uttam jethu. But we all respected her privacy. I heard many things about her from my father, and that formed my memory of her.
We lost our Mahanayak (the popular title given to Uttam Kumar) a long time back; now, our Mahanayika has left us too. It’s truly a great loss for all of us — for those who loved her uncondition-ally: her fans, followers and the industry.
There was a time when I, and every person I know, used to sit in front of the television just to watch some of the classics of Mrs Sen and Uttam jethu.
There are a lot of films that I still love watching, but Uttar Falguni (1963) truly touched my heart. As Rina Brown (Sen’s character in Saptapadi; 1961), she was the dream girl for many young boys at that time. I can bet she still is for many guys of this generation too.
