Vijay’s next, Mersal, will see him in a triple role.

The much-anticipated next film of Tamil superstar Vijay has been titled Mersal, and it was officially announced on Wednesday evening. Along with the title, a stunning new poster was unveiled and it took the internet by storm. The makers released one more poster at midnight on Thursday as a birthday gift to Vijay and his fans went berserk. Since last evening the film’s title has been trending on social media and Vijay’s fans are in no mood let the buzz fizzle out. It turns out, Mersal has been mentioned over a million times on Twitter, according to Twitter India, and it’s a new record for a Tamil film.

In the film, directed by Atlee, Vijay plays triple roles. He will be seen as a panchayat head, a doctor and a magician. The actor’s comic timing will be brought forth on screen through the magician’s role. His portions are intended to evoke laughter and lighten up the mood. The first poster features Vijay as the panchayat head, sporting a twirled mustache, and this role will be seen in the period portion. There is Jallikattu reference in this poster and it could be perceived that the film may address the recent Jallikattu row in Tamil Nadu. Vijay is seen as a magician in the second poster and although it wasn’t as well received as the first, fans still celebrated both the posters.

The makers had recently confirmed that the film will hit the screens worldwide in October, most likely for Diwali, as Rajinikanth’s 2.o has already backed out of the race. Being bankrolled by Sri Thenandal Films, AR Rahman is composing the music. The film stars actor-filmmaker SJ Suryah as an antagonist, apart from Kajal Aggarwal and Samantha Ruth Prabhu in key roles.
