This year, the Bhetli Tu Punha (2017) actor celebrated her birthday at home. An otherwise workaholic, Pooja Sawant enjoyed some family time on her birthday after a long time. “I love working on my birthdays. However, this year, my shoot team got to know of my birthday and gave me the day off. They almost forced me to rest it out,” smiles Pooja, who has won The Golden Calton award for Best Performance in a Lead Role for her film Lapachapi at Edinburgh film festival, 2017.
Religiously, every year, on her birthday, Pooja’s mom performs the aukshan and prepares her favourite food. “My mom is very particular about the ritual and it is okay if we don’t cut a cake, but the aukshan has to happen. My mom makes excellent sweetmeats and I am particular fond of pooran poli. She also makes snacks such as pani puri for me.” Recalling a memorable birthday, Pooja adds, “Last year, my sister arranged a surprise birthday party for me. It was a first and I was thrilled to be a part of it.”
The Poshter Boyz (2014) actor loves the way the Marathi film industry operates like one big extended family. She says, “No matter who the co-actor, producer or director is, the vibe on the sets is always positive and familiar. It is like one family. You just cannot have a straight professional relationship as the ties get stronger and everyone becomes family-like.”
This being said, Pooja feels the industry needs to work together on movie release clashes. “It is unfortunate that four films get released on a single day. The market of the Marathi industry is very niche, so in that if you have four films releasing together, you lose out on audience. We need to change this.”
