What should you do if you want to strike a conversation with somebody at a party? Even if you do introduce yourself, what must you say next?

An opening line that might strike a chord with one individual may not go down well with another. So, how does one decide what should be said? A study conducted by scientists from the University of Electronic Science and Technology in China seems to suggest that the key lies in using metaphors.

According to them, offering a compliment like “your smile is a naughty goblin” may get you a better response than an expression as tacky as “your lips are so sexy”. But be warned, you will have to find out for yourself if the lady in question is happy with her mouth being compared to a mystical creature with less-than-desirable attributes.

On second thoughts, you might want to think thrice before using the ‘goblin’ compliment.

Among other things, researchers also found that using expressions like “your garden is a sea of flowers” may earn you more brownie points than something akin to “your door is very strong” when appreciating articles in a woman’s abode. “The findings confirm our hypotheses that in a courtship situation, where compliments serve as a sexual display of mate quality, women show a preference for metaphors – particularly novel ones – in verbal structure,” they wrote.
