BEIJING: World No 2 Andy Murray crushed Russia’s Andrey Kuznetsov 6-2, 6-1 and fifth seed David Ferrer overwhelmed Italian Fabio Fognini 6-3, 6-4 to reach the China Open quarterfinals in Beijing on Wednesday.
Murray will meet his 21-year-old British compatriot Kyle Edmund, who upset Spanish world No 18 Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the last eight on Friday.
KVITOVA DUMPS TITLE HOLDER MUGURUZA
Petra Kvitova breezed past defending champion Garbine Muguruza 6-1, 6-4 to move into the quarterfinals while world No 1 Angelique Kerber battled past Barbora Strycova 6-3, 7-6(4) in the second round of the China Open. Kvitova will next face American Madison Keys, who beat Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova 7-6(2) 6-2.
NISHIKORI PULLS OUT OF JAPAN OPEN
TOKYO: Top seed Kei Nishikori withdrew from the Japan Open Wednesday due to a buttock muscle injury. He retired during the first set of his second-round match against Joao Sousa of Portugal. Nishikori was 4-0 up before his legs gave up. Sousa quickly made it 4-3, and Nishikori was forced to withdraw 41 minutes into the match.
