MARSEILLE: For organisers at a tournament like the European Championship, the less talk there is about the pitch, the better. That’s not the case this year. As the quarterfinals begin, worries about the playing surfaces persist.

Portugal coach Fernando Santos is concerned that the state of the grass at Marseille’s Stade Velodrome could mean less of a spectacle when his team faces Poland on Thursday.
SLUTSKY OUT AS RUSSIA COACH AFTER DEBACLE
MOSCOW: Russia coach Leonid Slutsky has officially severed his ties with the national team after they crashed out of Euro 2016 without a win, the country’s football union said Thursday.
The union announced in the statement the “end of cooperation” with Slutsky and thanked him for helping Russia qualify for the Euro.
OH YE OF LITTLE FAITH! DEANO’S PARKING WOE
LONDON: Former Welsh footballer turned soccer pundit Dean Saunders says he is braced for a shock after the Welsh team’s extended stay at Euro 2016.
“I tell you how confident I was with Wales. I parked in the shortstay car park at Birmingham Airport two weeks ago,” he told BBC radio. “I took a little suitcase that fitted on to the plane so I’ve run out of clothes; and now I’m going to have a 1,000 pounds bill when I get back to Birmingham because they charge you a fortune.”
