After quite a few seasons in professional football, 2009-10 was when Marco Borriello came of age. He scored his first ever brace for the Rossoneri in their 2-0 win over Parma on 1 November 2009.
On November 25th, Borriello scored his first Champions League goal against Marseille in a match that finished 1-1. Ahead of a fine run of form, Borriello scored another brace in Milan's 5-2 defeat of former club Genoa, one of his goals being an acrobatic bicycle kick from a cross from Luca Antonini.
The following week Borriello scored a lovely goal against A.C. Siena, when he hooked a 30 yard chipped pass from Pirlo into the top corner first time from an acute angle in a move that brought back memories of Marco Van Basten's strike for Holland against the USSR in Euro 1988. Borriello's fine performances for Milan this season have finally caught Lippi's eye and the 27-year-old received his first call-up since making the Nazionale squad for the 2008 European Championships under former boss Roberto Donadoni. Despite a fantastic season though, Borriello may not be able to fulfill his dream of starring in South Africa. Italy coach Marcelo Lippi is getting set to prune his current 28-man team to the final 23, and Borriello is rumored to be one of those set to face the axe.
Borriello though is confident. He thinks he has done enough to earn a ticket to the World Cup, and that if given the chance, he will shine. "I have shown my goalscoring skills at Milan and I think I can vie for a spot at the World Cup," he said.
