It was heartbreak for young Fed Cupper Rutuja Bhosale. The 16-year-old defending champion was shown the door in the first round of the Asian closed junior tennis at DLTA Complex on Tuesday.
After losing the first set 3-6 to Prarthana Thombare, the national champion had to win a tie break to level the scores in the second. However, Rutuja’s health took a toll as she threw up on court at 1-4 down in the decider. But, she was determined not to give up and continued till she lost 3-6.
Scheduled to play the doubles with Spurti Shivalingaiah, against Rimpledeep Kaur, and Kyoka Okamura (Japan) later in the day, they withdrew.
In the boys’ singles, top-seeded Arjun Khade thrashed Sanjar Fayziev of Uzbekistan 6-3, 6-3.
Blake stunned
Houston: Sixth-seeded Carlos Berlocq of Argentina overcame an injury to beat American James Blake 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 in a first-round match at the US men's clay court championship on Monday.
American Sam Querrey, a 2010 finalist, beat Eric Prodon of France 6-1, 6-4 in another first-round match. Former champion Tommy Haas withdrew with a right knee injury.
