It was not just a place in the second round that was at stake in Monday's Wimbledon match between childhood friends Andy Roddick and Justin Gimelstob -- it was a gentlemen's bet.
The American pair found time before the match to wager how many times acrobatic Gimelstob would dive during their encounter.
Roddick and his brother John, who used to play doubles with Gimelstob, had respectively predicted fewer and more than eight times.
"At one point I kind of had a quasi-bluff dive -- because I know his brother went over (eight), so I was trying to help him out on that one," Gimelstob told a news conference after the match which Roddick won 6-1 7-5 7-6.
And the betting did not stop there.
"He (Gimelstob) said he would be the first person in history to dive during the warmup," Roddick said.
"I actually messed that one up because I was supposed to hit a ball away from him that he could dive to and I missed three passing shots instead.
Gimelstob said his tendency to tumble around the court was not just something to bet on but also had a purpose.
