Last year, Murray beat Melzer in straight sets in the third round en route to the final, which he lost to Roger Federer. It was Murray's fifth straight win over Melzer.

The British player has lost just 22 games in four matches this year at Melbourne Park.

Murray's opponent in the quarterfinals will be Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov, who beat fourth-seeded Robin Soderling on Monday.
