Top-seeded Rafael Nadal outplayed fellow Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3, 6-2 to storm into the Chennai Open semifinals against two-time champion Carlos Moya on Friday. Third-seeded Moya swept aside Florent Serra of France 6-3, 6-4 in his quarterfinal.

Fourth-seeded Mikhail Youzhny of Russia ousted defending champion Xavier Malisse of Belgium 6-4, 6-4.

Youzhny will meet unseeded Marin Cilic in the semifinals after the Croatian defeated Dutchman Robin Haase 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Winner of the title in 2004 and '05, the 17th-ranked Moya was the first to secure passage into the semifinals before heavy showers caused a 3{-hour interruption during the opening set of Nadal's match, when he was leading Garcia-Lopez 2-1.

Nadal broke Garcia-Lopez in the eighth game of the opening set, and in the fifth and seventh games of the second. He said the semifinal against Moya will "be interesting as we often play together."

"Making the final at the start of the year is something I'm looking forward to," Nadal added.

Moya, who at 31 was the oldest player in the top 20, was optimistic.

"Rafael's a tough opponent, but I've got nothing to lose and will give my best," he said. "I'm improving with every outing and the quarterfinal was my best match of this week.
