Australian teenager Bernard Tomic was again forced to dig deep as he rallied back from a set down to reach the third round of the Australian Open with victory over America’s Sam Querrey on Wednesday.
The 19-year-old withstood 22 aces and 52 winners from Querrey to battle to a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3), 6-3 victory in two hours and 13 minutes. "It very difficult to really serve," said Tomic. "It was tough because he was hitting his forehand well. I think I was guessing the wrong way in the first set, and second set I started guessing the right way and he started missing a lot more first serves."
Tomic, the highest ranked Australian men’s player, created national headlines when he sensationally fought back from two sets down to knock out Spanish 22nd seed Fernando Verdasco in a thriller on Monday.
He next plays Ukrainian No 13 seed Alexandr Dolgopolov, who saved a match point at 5-6, 30/40 in the fifth set to beat Tobias Kamke 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, 3-6, 8-6.

Nadal beat German veteran Tommy Haas 6-4, 6-3, 6-4, declaring that the twisted tendon in the heavily taped knee was not a concern. Just before Federer was due on Hisense Arena, the Swiss player found out that his scheduled opponent, Germany’s Andreas Beck, had a back injury and had to withdraw.
Eighth-seed fish shocked
Eighth-seeded American Mardy Fish became the biggest casualty in the men’s singles draw.
Fish lost to Colombian Alejandro Falla 6-7(4-7), 3-6, 6-7(6-8) after losing two tie-breakers to make a disappointing straight-sets exit, which marked the third straight year that he failed to advance beyond the second round in Melbourne.
Seventh seed Czech Tomas Berdych dumped Olivier Rochus out in a straight sets 6-1, 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) win.
