Sania went down to her in-form doubles partner Elena Vesnina 4-6, 3-6 in the red clay event in Madrid on Sunday.

In the doubles, Sania and Elena open against eighth-seeded Czech pair Iveta Benesova and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova.
