Sania Mirza became the first Indian woman player to be seeded in the singles event of a Grand Slam when the seedings for the US Open were released on Tuesday. Sania, who reached a career high of 28 in world rankings, has been seeded 26th for the event beginning August 27.

Meanwhile, Sania’s opener against Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain at the $600,000 Pilot Pen Tennis Tournament at New Haven, USA was interrupted due to rain. Sania was trailing 0-1 in the first set against the 33-ranked Medina.
