Soderling eases into third round

Swedish sixth seed Robin Soderling advanced to the third round at Wimbledon with a 7-5, 6-1, 6-4 win over Spain’s Marcel Granollers on Thursday.

Swedish sixth seed Robin Soderling advanced to the third round at Wimbledon with a 7-5, 6-1, 6-4 win over Spain’s Marcel Granollers on Thursday. Soderling was never seriously threatened by Granollers and the Swede will play Brazilian 25th seed Thomaz Bellucci in the next round.

Sixteenth seed Sharapova also advanced to the third round with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Romania’s Ioana Raluca Olaru.

Bhupathi-Mirnyi in 2nd round

Mahesh Bhupathi and his partner Max Mirnyi sailed into the second round of the men’s doubles event with a 7-5, 6-1, 7-5 victory over Argentine duo of Maximo Gonzalez and Sebastian Prieto. The fourth-seeded Indo-Belarus pair now meet the British duo of Jamie Delgado and Joshua Goodall.

Sania, Paes win opening doubles

Sania Mirza was off to a winning start in women’s doubles event as the Indian and her Dane partner Caroline Wozniacki notched up a 6-4, 6-1 victory over local favourites Anne Keothavong and Melanie South to enter the second round. Meanwhile, third seeds Paes and Dlouhy shrugged off a one-set deficit to beat South African Rik De Voest and German Mischa Zverev 6-7 (4) 6-4 6-3 in a hard-fought contest.

Men’s singles: A Murray (GBR) bt J Nieminen (FIN) 6-3, 6-4, 6-2; Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA) bt A Dolgopolov (UKR) 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (5/7), 5-7, 10-8; R Soderling (SWE) bt M Granollers (ESP) 7-5, 6-1, 6-4.

Women’s singles: F Pennetta (ITA) bt M Niculescu (ROU) 6-1, 6-1; M Sharapova (RUS) bt I.R. Olaru (ROU) 6-1, 6-4; C Wozniacki (DEN) bt C Kai-Chen (TPE) 6-4, 6-3.
