It took Vishnu Vardhan exactly three hours to holler and pump his fists in the air. It was a long drawn battle but ultimately the joy as dent on the second seed’s face as he defeated compatriot Rohan Gajjar 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the final of the $15000 ITF Men’s Futures tournament at DLTA on Saturday.
Coming into the match, Vardhan was always under pressure. “I wanted to end my last tournament this year on a high,” the Davis Cupper said. “Thus I was a little nervous and lucky.”
Today was probably anybody’s match and it all boiled down to who could hold on to the nerves and make less unforced errors. Though tough winners from both ends made the crowd gasp, it was ultimately Gajjar’s errors that helped Vardhan.
After losing the first set, Gajjar made sure the match didn’t end in straight sets. He fought tooth and nail, running in all directions, playing his hard baseline game to unnerve Vardhan. With a strong service, he managed to do just that, pocketing the set on his third set point.
In the decider, Gajjar tried his level best to halt his compatriot but unfortunately his game was strewn with too many errors. After a massive improvement in his fitness level, he must now learn variations as the powerful hard hitting game does not always work.

{{/usCountry}}Vardhan, whose physical fitness too has seen a vast improvement, credits it all to a session he had with good friend Somdev Devvarman. “I’m trying to get in to the best possible physical shape,” he said.
