Having lost the first set on a tie-break, Ramkumar Ramathan fought back to win what his first match in an ATP 1000 tournament.

He was given entry into the ATP Cincinnati Masters main draw as a lucky loser because France’s Gael Monfils withdrew from the tournament due to illness.

Earlier, Ramanathan had taken part in the qualifying rounds over the weekend but narrowly lost out in the final round to Germany’s Maximilian Marterer.

Gael Monfils was coming into the tournament on the back of a third round exit at Montreal after defeating Japan’s Kei Nishikori in the second round.

Earlier this month, Monfils lost in the first round of the ATP Citi Open in Washington to Yuki Bhambri. To add insult to injury, the Frenchman was the defending champion.

Ramkumar Ramathan will face either Jared Donaldson or Roberto Bautista Agut in the second round of the Cincinnati Masters.
