The state government in Mumbai has warned cattle farm owners in Aarey Colony that their licenses will be cancelled for not paying dues of ₹24 crore ($3.4 million). The farm owners have requested concession in interest and penalty amounts, claiming the government made errors in calculating the total amount. There are currently 505 license holders with over 16,000 animals in 32 cattle farms on 240 acres of land in Aarey. The government levies license fees and water charges to these farm owners.

Aarey Colony is part of Sanjay Gandhi National Park’s (SGNP) extended eco-sensitive zone (ESZ). “Not only does the immersion of Ganesh idols pollute natural resources, the use of loudspeakers and sound systems by DJs in the ESZ can also be detrimental to wildlife and give impetus to conflict,” Stalin D, director of city-based NGO Vanashakti, said.
