As per the GMDA report, put on its website on December 31, at least 80 million litres of untreated sewage flows directly into Gurugram’s stormwater drains every day, polluting rivers, damaging underground water table, posing a huge health hazard to the nearby population and triggering urban floods every monsoon.

Delhi government planning 16 ‘natural STPs’ to treat sewage entering Yamuna

The natural sewage treatment plant (STP) comprises of a sedimentation tank where the sewage is allowed to stand for the total suspended solids to settle down. Water is then passed through four chambers and multiple compartments, which have beds of pebbles of various sizes. This stage filters the sewage.

Yamuna is almost dead with high levels of toxic chemicals. The committee said sewage, mainly faecal sludge from these colonies being directly emptied into the river, adds to extremely high levels of pollutants not allowing the water body to sustain life.
