The Election Commission noted that before 2003, disqualification applied in case of conviction for two or more years. Sikkim Chief Minister Tamang was convicted in a corruption case in 1996-97 and jailed for one year in 2017.

The SDF, which ruled the Himalayan state for 25 years, is now left with just one legislator even though as many as 13 candidates of the party won 15 seats in the April election to the 32-member assembly.

Chief Minister and SDF supremo Pawan Chamling won the Poklok Kamrang Assembly seat defeating his nearest Sikkim Krantikari Morcha rival Kharka Bahadur Rai by 2,899 votes.

Sikkim opposition parties set for pre-poll alliance against Chamling
