The World Travel and Tourism Council this week announced its list of finalists for the prestigious Tourism for Tomorrow Awards, set to be presented in April.
The awards, among the world's most high profile for responsible tourism, recognize achievements by destinations and companies in the areas of conservation, community benefit, destination stewardship and responsible tourism business.
The places up for recognition in the Conservation category, which requires winners to have made a direct contribution to the preservation of nature, wildlife and biodoversity, include Cheli & Peacock Safaris in Kenya, the Inkaterra Peru hotel and research project in Peru and the NamibRand private nature reserve in Namibia.
Those in the Community Benefit categories include the US-based Saunders Hotel Group, the Soria Moria Boutique Hotel in Cambodia and The Thailand Community Based Tourism Institute.
Among the destinations vying for the prize are Røros in Norway, the Misool Eco Resort in Indonesia and the Tanabe City Kumano Tourism Bureau in Japan.
Potential winners in the International Business award include Singapore luxury hotel firm Banyan Tree, US-based adventure holiday specialist REI Adventures and South Africa-based conservation tourism firm Wilderness Group.
The winners will be announced on April 17 and are chosen by an international committee which includes journalists, government representatives, non-profit organizations and the private sector.
