‘35K guests, don’t recall any’

Popular TV show anchor Jerry Springer’s ‘tabloid’ show, The Jerry Springer Show, has entered its 21st season. The show has seen 35,000 guests so far across the seasons. However, the host remembers only two of them.

The anchor is understandably elated: “Now, it doesn’t bother me at all that my show is called a tabloid show. We are unlike other chat shows and we have our audience. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the audience in India likes what they see on my show.”

The Jerry Springer Show is on air in India on BIG CBS network and on another broadcaster in the USA for the first time.

Jerry recalls being assigned the show several years ago when the then-popular host Phil Donahue was about to resign.

He was taken out for lunch and told that he had to step into anchoring a brand new chat show.

“I was anchoring news in Cincinnati, Ohio. The company that owned the news station I originally worked for had talk shows by Phil and Sally Jesse Raphael. Like any other job, I was ‘assigned’ to anchor a show that’s become 21 seasons old now. And I’m not bored of it,” he smiles.

The show has seen 35,000 guests so far across the seasons. However, the host remembers only two of them.

“We’ve had some really outrageous and some very moving people on our show. Our first episode on September 30, 1991, reunited a woman with her kids whom she hadn’t seen in 35 years. On another occasion, a gentleman, who appeared on my show, had cut off his penis because he was being stalked by another man,” Jerry reminisces with a frown. “Why couldn’t he just change his number and move on? I’m still pondering. So, it’s a good thing and I’m proud that I don’t remember any of my guests.”
