A total of 17.6 million viewers tuned in to the award ceremony for the '65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards', making it the most watched Emmys in eight years, the Nielsen Co. said Monday.

The number was the best for the Emmys since 2005 when the ceremony was viewed by 18.6 million people, Xinhua reported.

The number stands in contrast with that of last year as the event, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris and televised by ABC, drew 13.3 million people.

More than 40 million viewers have caught some portion of this year's programme, according to the Nielsen data released by CBS.
