There are few things more addictive in the world than well-made, absorbing TV shows. And while they might be in somewhat short supply on our Hindi entertainment channels, there’s no such deficiency on the English channels.
I was hooked to The Killing (FX), a haunting cop drama, and utterly relieved when the first season ended and I was free of that (actually wonderful) tension: what’s going to happen next? Who’s the real killer? The expected twists in at the end — which were obviously unexpected — made for a very satisfying cherry on top of an already very satisfying cake.
Right now, I’m fixed on Lost (Zee Café). I know, the world and its uncle has seen it — after all, it premiered way back in 2004 and is one of American television’s most iconic series — but somehow I missed it. Life happens. Anyhow, Lost began superbly, then sagged a bit, picked up beautifully but dipped again. Right now though, it’s putting out some of the best episodes of the season (that would be season 3).
Recently, two other personal favourites have returned with new seasons — Suits (season 3, Comedy Central) and Supernatural (season 9, AXN). Suits is a New York-based legal drama and you should watch it for — if nothing else — the cast’s super stylish clothes. Lead actor Gabriel Macht, who plays the smart, ambitious lawyer Harvey Specter, wears seriously sharp suits; and the women on the show turn up in the most glamorous office wear. But you should also watch Suits for its high-tension drama and witty dialogue. In the latest season, new layers — in terms of characters and their shared histories — are being unpeeled and that’s always interesting.

{{/usCountry}}The other show, Supernatural, about two demon-hunting brothers (Dean and Sam Winchester), is one of the longest-running TV series in America. It has become a cult show over the years — primarily because of its good-looking leading men, the compelling mythology of the show, and the heavy dose of powerful emotions. The new season opened with a solid punch — Sam is dying and Dean has to either allow his brother to die or save him by allowing him to be possessed by an angel. Viewers who haven’t watched the show might not think this sounds like a big deal (angels are nice, aren’t they?), but this is a plot twist that will have momentous consequences.
Dean’s decision will once again test the complex bond between the two brothers. Finally. I continue to watch Anil Kapoor’s 24 (Colors). And so should you. Maybe it won’t become the best-rated show overnight, but that’s because it’s different. Viewers who have been fed on typical Hindi serials over the last 10 years will take some time before they make friends with this new animal in their living rooms. But they will — sooner rather than later.
