As the country begins the grand celebration of the nine holy nights, TV stars tell us what makes their Navratri special

When I wasn’t doing daily shows, I would make it a point to go to pandals and dance to my heart’s content. A visit to Falguni Pathak’s pandal was a must. I still visit pandals as a celebrity guest, and dance for 10 minutes at least, as they play really good music. This year I will visit pandals in Kolkata, Delhi, Surat and Mumbai.

My mom has always kept garba at home. Garba is actually a small decorative pot with holes and a diya lit inside. This is kept before Ambe maataji. What I love about Navratri is the variety of dance forms I get to see. I recently went to Kolkata, where I was judging a dance competition. The participants mixed the traditional garba and dandiya style with a variety of props. They even used swords as dandiyas! It was a very interesting act altogether.

On our show Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, we have a grand celebration planned. As Daya is the brand ambassador of garba on the show, we will celebrate Navratri with gusto. As for real life, after shooting for the soap, I hardly have time to relax so I don’t do much. I don’t even visit pandals as it gets hectic. I do it only if a friend I can’t refuse asks me to.

It’s fun to go to such places and interact with the audience directly. They are always fun-spirited and enthusiastic. At home, we play music CDs and have a garba celebration on the terrace. My father is a Mataji devotee and mom invites 10-15 young girls for bhog.
