They say history repeats itself and that is what is happening these days on our television sets. The first serials in television history Hum Log and Buniyaad based on social issues and partition made a mark on TV viewers and now after almost quarter century, serials based on social evils are receiving rave reviews from people. Be it Balika Vadhu or Uttaran, people have accepted such serials with open arms and are asking for more.
Saas-Bahu out Lado in
Leaving the saas-bahu operas behind serials on social issues have come in to focus and are appreciated by people. "Saas-bahu serial were very masala oriented and apt for housewives but there was reality into such serials," says Madhu, housewife.
On the top
TV channels and specifically Colors started this new concept by launching Balika Vadhu and Utaran, for which the channel has got highest TRPs. Other channels like star plus has followed and has launched serials like Bandini. "These kind of serial are very good for the society like us. It is good that TV channels are raising this issue. Serials based on women and specially girl child can actually help people in understanding the issue well," says Rama Balachandaran, Sr officer, Deepalaya (NGO working for women and children).

Like films formulas are also working on television, first it was saas-bahu formula and now it is female foeticide. Oppression against women is a harsh reality but it also serves as a great script for our TV producers. And that is why after the sucess of Balika Vadhu, Colours is coming up with a new series Is Des na aana Lado, and the promo of the serial is already running these days.

"There may be this idea to cash on such subjects, but ultimately these serials work as an eye opener for the people. TV works as a good medium to educate people, I even have seen the impact of such serials. People have actually changed their mind and sent their girls to school after watching these soaps," says Swasthi Udayan, resource mobiliser at Udayan Care.
Whatever may be the idea behind such soaps, but we got rid of saas-bahus' endless sagas!
