Parenthood comes to TV

Two decades after the Steve Martin-starrer Parenthood became a box office hit, its television adaptation is debuting on NBC channel in the US this week.

Two decades after the Steve Martin-starrer Parenthood became a box office hit, its television adaptation is debuting on NBC channel in the US this week.

That wide gap suits executive producer Jason Katims, who is pursuing a fresh take on the lives of an extended family with a new cast. Katims said that he got the green light to do Parenthood his way from Ron Howard, director of the 1989 film, and Brian Grazer, its producer. Howard and Grazer, with Katims, are executive producers of the series.

“What got them excited was what is going to be new about this version,” said Katims. That includes giving more attention to the drama, versus comedy. Katims, whose Friday Night Lights hasn’t captured ratings to equal its strong reviews, hopes Parenthood will cover up for that.
