In India, the race to the TV premiere is mostly run by Bollywood films. The logic is simple: a film that makes big money at the box office — Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012) or Ek Tha Tiger (2012), for instance — will also generate high TV ratings. Now, however, with the market increasingly receptive towards foreign productions, the demand for new Hollywood films has seen a rapid increase.

The latest James Bond film, Skyfall (the 2012 film which premieres today, October 27, at 1 pm and will be screened again at 9 pm on Sony Pix) was one of the biggest grossers among Hollywood films last year. In fact, the Sam Mendes-directed film, starring Daniel Craig as secret agent 007, set the record for the second-highest opening weekend for a Hollywood film in India (`27.5 cr reportedly) when it released here in November 2012. Add to that list the two previous James Bond films — Quantum of Solace (2008) and Casino Royale (2006) — and The Amazing Spiderman (2012), which also had remarkable box-office opening figures. Earlier, the 2009 sci-fi film, Avatar, got record sponsorship deals for its TV premiere in 2011.
