help build the chemistry between an on-screen couple, lovemaking scenes not only grab eyeballs but also deliver high ratings.

Sadly, not all such scenes are shot aesthetically or with the kind of finesse that is needed for a family audience. Often, directors get carried away with the idea of portraying sensuousness, and, in the bargain, go a bit too over-the-top.
The cringeworthy zooming of the camera on the arms, back and navel of the actress to the extreme close-ups of the eyes of the couple, there is no end to the distasteful manners in which intimate scenes are shot. In a recent episode of Jodha Akbar, one could sense the hesitation of Paridhi Sharma (who plays Jodha) while partaking in the scene, especially at the crucial point when Akbar kisses the nape of her neck and unties a string of her blouse.

Though we would like to believe that Indian audiences are now ready to accept mature content on TV, the truth is that when you’re watching a serial with your family, it gets a tad uncomfortable to sit through these passion-filled sequences.
Intimate bedroom scenes are very common in western shows, but, whenever an Indian serial attempts to get one right, it fails. Somehow, lip locks work out much better than full-fledged lovemaking sequences. Ram Kapoor and Sakshi Tanwar’s kissing scene in Bade Achhe Lagte Hain was shot very well.
Many others, such as those between actors Ankit Gera and Roopal Tyagi in Sapne Suhane Ladakpan Ke, and Niaa Sharma and Kushal Tandon in Ek Hazaron Mein Meri Bhena Hai, were also handled beautifully.
Although TV is taking the liberty to show bolder content than ever before, sometimes, it ends up portraying sexiness in its women in stereotypical ways like a revealing drape of a sari, bare-back blouses etc. We’ve come a long way, no doubt, but there are miles to go.
