How come a winner of Big Brother is making a comeback on television with its desi version as a host?
Meaning? Meaning, isn’t it a step backwards?

(Laughs) Are you crazy? The scenario has changed completely. The small screen isn’t small any more. Even Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar are accessible today on the remote control. Do you still consider it a step backwards?

But why take it up? Didn’t you have enough of it on Big Brother?
Tables have turned, you see. I’m not getting into the house this time. I’m the host.. the sutradhar. And I understand the importance of the role.

When I was in the Big Brother house I would look forward to the eviction episode because we would then get to interact with the host, Davina McCall. She was our only link with the outside world. I’m the link now.
Besides, the format works.. it’s entertaining. People may criticise it but they watch it too. I watched Season One for two weeks and I was hooked.

So, what’s your take on the former host Arshad Warsi?
He had his own style. But let me tell you Shilpa Shetty cannot be Arshad Warsi and vice-versa. I’ll be different.

Different? (Cuts in) Wait for the show. Why do you want to spoil the fun by asking?
But the buzz is that you have taken it up because you are being paid a huge fee. Of course. (Laughs) But everyone’s paid well these days, isn’t it? In my case, it’s a little high.

Why does the show work, according to you?
It’s basic human nature. We like to know what’s happening in other people’s lives. That’s the reason why we listen to news and read magazines.

But don’t you think the show brings out the worst in people?
It didn’t bring out the worst in me. The show, in fact, brings out your inherent personality. And the ones who are willing to get into the house are those who have nothing to hide or those who are only looking for fame.

So what’s your advice for them?
Just be yourself. If you try to be someone else, that will fall through sooner than later. Rahul Roy won the first season. He was all goody-goody.

Do you think that strategy works?
(Laughs) Yeah, I guess to win you must be goody-goody or Jade Goody.

Oh, so you still hold a grudge against Ms Goody?
No yaar.. I’m just kidding.

Whom would you like to see in your dream Bigg Boss house?
Shah Rukh Khan and Laloo Prasad Yadav. I’d also like to see Rakhi Sawant and Mika Singh.

Why not produce the third season then?
I would not produce a show like that. I’d rather make something like Tyra Banks’ America’s Next Top Model. And I’m a TV addict. I watch anything from movie trailers to plain rubbish.

What about Fear FactorKhatron Ke Khiladi? Have you seen the show?
Yes, I have. Those girls are amazing. Hats off to them. I could never do all those stunts. I can’t swim. I’m afraid of heights. I’m a major darpok.

Really? You surprise me.
(Laughs) I’ve surprised myself too.
