- The tension between the United States, its European allies and Russia has now escalated as senior officials from the US warned that Russia is poised to invade and attack Ukraine. Soon after the announcement, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken rushed to Ukraine in a show of support. Blinken is due to hold discussions with President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kiev, before meeting European allies in Berlin and his Russian counterpart in Geneva on January 21. Russia however, has repeatedly denied planning to invade their neighbour and yet senior US officials say Moscow could attack at "any point". The US fears rose after Russia sent troops to its ally Belarus to hold military exercises next month. The US and Ukraine call it an escalation and show of aggression by Vladimir Putin. Remember, Russia demands banning Ukraine from NATO membership and wants limitations on the number of NATO troops in Poland and the Baltic states that were a part of the erstwhile Soviet Union.
