Karnataka’s first successful intestine transplant performed

Updated on Apr 08, 2017 04:48 pm IST

An ailing worker in his mid-forties got his intestine transplanted, becoming the first person across the state to be operated on with such a surgery. Venkatesh, a factory worker, came to the Bengaluru-based Apollo Hospital with just 10-centimetres of his intestine remaining. Diagnosed with acute mesenteric ischemia, he got a donor after thriving on Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) for months. The intestinal transplant was performed without creating a stoma so that the patient can continue his bowel movement in a normal manner. Acute mesenteric ischemia is a medical condition in which the cells of intestine die due to a shortage of oxygen.
