'Can be disastrous': WHO chief on lifting Covid-19 restrictions 'too quickly'

  • WHO Chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned against lifting Covid curbs too quickly. Tedros said lifting restrictions could be disastrous for those who are not vaccinated. Tedros added that the glaring vaccine inequality has created a 'two-track pandemic’. “We see a two-track pandemic, many countries still face a dangerous situation. While, some with highest vaccination rates are talking about ending restrictions. We have seen a decline in mortality rates in countries with access to vaccines. Lifting restrictions quickly could be disastrous for those who are not vaccinated. High-income countries have administered almost 44% of the world's doses. Low-income countries have so far administered just 0.4% of doses,” Ghebreyesus said. He added, “10% population of all countries must be vaccinated by September, 30% by year-end. We need an additional 250 million doses by September, 100 million in June & July.”
